Places 2 Check Out: Sparks Coffee Shop

Posted: Updated:

On the corner of Oddie Boulevard and El Rancho is a building that's housed many restaurants over the years. But now, The Sparks Coffee Shop is calling it home for good.

Jose Reyes opened his dream a little more than a year ago. He learned under his brother, who owns The Sunrise Cafe on the Mt. Rose Highway. And once he felt like he was ready, he went out on his own. "I have a family and I just want to offer them the best I can. It was a big risk, but I think it's working."

It's working because Jose has created a homy feeling and created a staff that treats you just like family. He's quick to credit the people surrounding him. "The people who I have working for me, they do their jobs really well. Everything is a compliment. The food, service."

What also makes The Sparks Coffee Shop so popular is the wide ranging menu. Everything from omelettes to salads to Mexican food. They offer something for everyone. "All the people have been liking the omelettes, the eggs benedict, the Mexican dishes like the huevos rancheros, the enchiladas, those things."

Jose works side-by-side with his youngest brother. They're a team that works fast to get the food to your table hot, fresh and always made from scratch. And the food has become so popular, they're expanding their hours. The Sparks Coffee shop is now open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday from 5-9. Of course breakfast and lunch are still offered daily from 7am to 2pm. But these long hours are nothing new to Jose and his family. They say that's how they're used to working. "For me I own a business now, but I'm doing the same thing that I've been doing for many years."
