Registration Begins for WCSD's Parent University

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County School District will launch Parent University with a registration fair on Thursday, Sept. 20 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Dilworth Middle School in Sparks. Free childcare and interpretation in Spanish will be available to families at the fair, where they can register for classes that will best help them support their child's specific learning needs.

Parents can also register for classes this year online at www.wcsdparentu.org, by emailing parentuniversity@washoeschools.net, or by calling 325-2000. Families are encouraged to register, but walk-ins are also welcome.

Parent University classes offer information about how parents can support math and literacy learning at home and help their children apply for college admittance and scholarships. All family members of students in northern Nevada are welcome to attend Parent University classes, which are held during the morning and evening hours at schools and community locations throughout Reno and Sparks. There will be more than 280 classes held during the 2012-2013 school year.

"We have several new titles this year for parents including classes on Common Core State Standards and field trips to our Washoe County libraries," said Maria Fernandez, WCSD Parent University coordinator. "There is something for every family to learn about how to support their child's education, and we hope to provide our busy families easy access to this information."

Parent University is a partnership between WCSD and more than 20 community partners including Nevada PEP, Nevada PTA, the Washoe County libraries, Join Together Northern Nevada, and many more. WCSD Parent University is coordinated through the Department of Family-School Partnerships and is part of the District's strategic plan, WCSD Envision 2015 – Investing In Our Future.
