After nine years as the Athletic Director at the University of Nevada, Reno Cary Groth announced she will be stepping down at the end of this academic school year.
When I asked Groth who she believes will replace her when she steps aside, she only mentioned one name.
"I know Rory Hickock's name has been mentioned and Rory has been with the program longer than I've been. He would be a good candidate," said Groth. "I think he is very interested in the job, but the president should conduct a national search and hire the best person possible for that job."
Groth said most importantly, the new athletic director must be able to get creative and generate new revenue.
Groth said she believes the university will need to come up with an additional $18 million a year to stay competitive in the Mountain West Conference.
I asked her, where will they come up with that kind of money?
She said there are a few ideas floating around. One of them being raising student fees.
I also asked Groth to look back on her years at Nevada and give me one point of frustration.
"I wish the community would have accepted the direction that we were moving in. Not the whole community, but I think you have your detractors, people that worry too much about what they shouldn't worry about."
