Initial Jobless Claims Fall 9.7% in August

Posted: Updated:

The number of Nevadans filing for new jobless benefits fell 9.7% in August compared with the same month a year ago.

According to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, 17,003 initial claims were filed last month, down from 18,825 filed in August 2011.

State economist Bill Anderson tells the Associated Press the rate of initial claims has been decreasing in 32 of the past 33 months and suggests Nevada's economy is stabilizing. He adds, however, that job loss remains elevated and the pace of employment growth is likely to remain slower than pre-recession levels for some time to come.

The agency will release its detailed August unemployment report on September 21.  (AP)
