As part of the Washoe County School District's ongoing efforts to reach out to students who are in need of extra help to graduate from high school, the District is recruiting volunteers to participate in its fourth annual "Door to Door for Student Achievement" program on Saturday, September 29.
During this endeavor, members of the community, legislators, parents, and District officials conduct home visits with students who are not enrolled in school, have stopped attending their classes, or are at risk of dropping out. During these visits, District officials try to determine what resources are available to help students resume their education or rededicate themselves to their studies.
"This is truly a community effort, and it is crucial to the success of many students in our District," said Superintendent Pedro Martinez. "Some are having trouble succeeding in certain classes while others are dealing with challenges at home. As a community, we want to reach out to these students with resources and support, and remind them they can still find success at school. We must not allow them to fall by the wayside, and we cannot leave them behind."
During these door-to-door visits, volunteers and District staff talk with students and their parents about why they are not in school and what resources would make it possible for them to return. Students can immediately re-enroll in school, while District staff begin to build a personalized plan that will enable them to continue their education. Some students may prefer to take online courses, switch schools, or work with tutors in order to continue their education and graduate.
"This is a call to action for the entire community," said Ken Grein, president of the Board of Trustees. "Our District is committed to helping every student graduate from high school ready for college or a highly-skilled career. We are eager to provide help and support for students who need it, so we can welcome them back to the classroom where they belong."
