RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The interim dean of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension says big cuts proposed in a tentative budget will mean reduced or eliminated programs and staff layoffs.
The extension is facing $2 million in cuts under a budget request endorsed last month by the state Board of Regents.
Interim Dean Jerry Buk tells the Reno Gazette-Journal that level of cuts could mean the loss of 150 jobs, with 72 teaching and research faculty losing their positions and an estimated 70 more being eliminated because of the anticipated loss in grant money.
Buk says $5.5 million will be siphoned from the program to fund other needs at University of Nevada, Reno, resulting in a loss of 60 percent of the Cooperative Extension's budget starting July 1, 2013.
