An apartment building in Sparks remains evacuated after a vehicle ran into the building and struck a natural gas line.
The Sparks Police Department says the accident happened at 1690 Merchant Way in Sparks. Police say Antonio Trinidad-Pineada was backing up when he hit a fence then accelerated forward hitting the building's bank of gas meters.
The Sparks Police and Fire Departments, NV Energy and a City of Sparks building inspector all responded to make sure the building is safe.
Police evacuated the building hit and three other apartment buildings nearby while firefighters connected to a hydrant just in case the gas ignited. Fortunately, so far the building is safe and no one has been hurt.
NV Energy helped control the leak by crimping the main gas line to the meters and ventilated the building, but as 9:30am Wednesday still hasn't located the main shut-off for the building.
A City of Sparks building inspector will evaluate the integrity of the building once everything else is complete. So far, the authorities involved don't know if the building will be re-occupied.
Police did cite Trinidad-Pineada for careless driving, no driver's license and no insurance. If you know anything about the accident, please call Sparks Police Traffic Section at (775) 353-2241 extension 503.
