Charles Asa Sanford
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A Reno man arrested on suspicion torching his vehicle and causing a wildfire after leading authorities on a chase won't be charged with arson.
Washoe County Deputy District Attorney Roy Stralla says there was insufficient evidence to prove the Pinehaven Fire was intentionally set July 2 by Charles Sanford.
Stralla told the Reno Gazette-Journal that Sanford's vehicle was damaged so much from flames that investigators couldn't determine the cause of the fire.
Sanford on Thursday pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of eluding police.
He's accused of fleeing on foot from his slowing vehicle when he reached a dirt road in west Reno. A sheriff's deputy says the vehicle was on fire when it went down a ravine.
No homes were threatened by the subsequent 206-acre fire.
