Law enforcement officials and community members gathered to remember last year's deadly shootout at a Carson City IHOP restaurant.
A memorial ceremony was held Friday night at the Pony Express Pavilion in Carson Mills Park.
The hope is - the memorial will be part of the healing process. It's called the "With Hope, Resolve and Strength, Carson City Remembers" memorial. A tree will be planted and a monument will be constructed in honor of the victims.
The ceremony concludes with the release of a butterfly.
Four people, including three uniformed Nevada National Guardsmen, were killed when 32-year-old Eduardo Sencion opened fire at the pancake house during breakfast time Sept. 6. Seven others were injured before Sencion shot himself dead.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the memorial will help bring closure and show that the community has the strength to overcome evil.
"For me it's a very difficult event to get through and get past. You could say it's the one day that public safety failed to protect our community. Because many people's lives were lost."
