Reno Donates Old YMCA Building To Boys and Girls Club

Posted: Updated:

In 2008, the City of Reno acquired the old YMCA building on Foster Drive.

Since then, city officials said they haven't been able to do anything with the building because of budget cuts.

Now, four years later, there's a new plan.

Wednesday, the City of Reno donated the building to The Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. The club plans to demolish the old building and build a new one with a youth center.

The city says it's a win-win for that part of town.

"It will be very important to put life back into that site in this part of town," said Chris Good with the City of Reno. "Right now, recreation opportunities are limited in this part of town. The Boys and Girls Club moving in there offering programming for kids is going to be very good for this community."

All this is possible because of a $9 million grant by the William N. Pennington Foundation.

They offered to build the new center if The Boys and Girls Club pitches in $3.5 million by the end of the year.

Mike Wurm of The Boys and Girls Club says it will take a lot of fundraising to make that happen, but when it's done, he said it will be well worth it.

"It will be a full services Boys and Girls Club. It will have a youth center, teen center. It will have a cafeteria so we can serve meals, which we do quite a bit of. There will be a large gymnasium for sports leagues and what not."

If you want to volunteer or help donate to the new building, call The Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows at (775) 331-5437.
