A local school is celebrating the start of the school year with a new home. Excel Christian School is moving its operations to a new building in Sparks, and scrambling to get everything ready for the start of the year.
Construction is still ongoing on what will be their new elementary school. It will be a few more months until that is finished, but until then they have converted the old YMCA building on Baring Boulevard into their new home.
"In the next few days we have to pull a lot together to make it happen," Excel Vice Principal Kristopher Dahir said, "but we'll be there. We'll be there."
School starts at Excel on Tuesday, but based in the rooms filled with towering boxes full of supplies and empty bookshelves, things are not quite there yet. But with help from staff, parents, and volunteers, the 150 Excel students will have a new place of learning.
Excel is a private Christian school for Kindergarten through 12th grade. Dahir said they keep the class sizes small to facilitate learning and close relationships between staff and students.
"It is exciting," Dahir said. "We get to just walk with these students and give them small class sizes, give them a place where they can grow and make great friends and learn at a level that they can learn at."
