Republicans Nominate Mitt Romney for President

Posted: Updated:

Republicans have nominated former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president, culminating a long primary fight and setting the stage for a close contest against President Barack Obama.

In a roll call of states Tuesday, New Jersey put Romney over the top, giving him the prize that eluded him four years ago. Romney is scheduled to accept his party's nomination in a speech Thursday night.

Republican voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals before settling on Romney, who effectively clinched the nomination in May. All of Romney's former GOP competitors have endorsed him, with the exception of Texas Rep. Ron Paul.

Paul did not have enough support to have his name placed in nomination, but he got votes in roll call.

Republicans also nominated Paul Ryan for vice president, completing the GOP ticket.

In a satellite interview with Channel 2 News Monday, Mitt Romney's son Josh Romney said Nevada has a big part to play in this year's convention. "Governor Sandoval and Lt. Governor Krolicki have been great supporters of my dad and we appreciate what they stand for. Nevada is obviously a very important state where we're working hard to make voters understand what we stand for."

Chris Christie will give the keynote address tonight. On CBS This Morning the New Jersey governor said he'll help lay out a vision for the party.

"What does it mean to be a Republican and what will that mean over the next four years after Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are elected. What will Republican governance look like and what will it mean for the people of our country?"

A new CBS News poll shows the presidential race is a dead heat - President Obama holds a one point lead among registered voters. But, 32% of those polled say they don't have an opinion or don't know enough about Mitt Romney.

The CBS News poll gives President Obama a ten point advantage among female voters.

Barbara Agema - a Romney supporter from Michigan - says it's the media that has made the gender gap an issue.

"Governor Romney has done a great job I think he's been painted with the wrong brush, I think he's very likeable. I think he is very likeable."

Romney is scheduled to accept the nomination on Thursday.

Republicans say they are keeping a close eye on Isaac and the impact it may have on Gulf States and sources say there may be further changes to the convention schedule if conditions warrant.

The Nevada State Democratic Party released the following statement responding to Nevada's delegation to the Republican Convention again rejecting Mitt Romney today in favor of Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul.  The final delegate count was 17 for Ron Paul, only 5 for Mitt Romney and 5 abstentions.

"Even Nevada Republicans are rejecting Mitt Romney and his plan to let Wall Street write its own rules while giving massive tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires on the middle class' dime. Today's snub by the Nevada delegation only further highlights how out-of-touch Mitt Romney is with Nevada's middle class."
