Back-to-School Spending Goes Up as Classes Near

Posted: Updated:

The price of gas is going up, but that doesn't seem to be affecting school shopping.

The people we talked to say they'll be buying what's on the list and maybe even more.

And retailers we talked to are seeing the results.

"We're actually seeing great trends with our back-to-school. Since July every school has been starting once a week so we're seeing great guest traffic in our store," says Lacey Tompkins of Target.

We found lots of families shopping for back-to-school supplies at the Target store at the Legends at Sparks Marina.

Tompkins says popular items are flying off the shelves faster than they can re-stock.

This year, kids want new backpacks and new lunch boxes in colorful prints.

Then there's the class lists of must-haves which seem to get more expensive as the kids move into the higher grades.

College students are adding to the positive cash flow for area retailers with dorm supplies.

Families we talked to say if they need it for school, it takes priority.

"Probably lots of crayons and markers and paper. Notebooks, that sort of thing," says Sheila Kerney.

Several reports show that retailers are seeing an upswing in sales, but with the price of gas going up, the questions is - will people keep spending after classes get underway?
