Konrad Schmidt smashed a solo home run in the eighth inning to break-up the shutout bid, but an early Round Rock lead lifted the Express to a 14-1 victory over the Reno Aces Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark.
Round Rock scored four runs in the second, added three in third and tacked-on two more in the fourth to build an advantage that was never threatened. Schmidt's homer in the eighth was his sixth of the season.
Aces starter Charles Brewer (9-7) took the loss, surrendering nine runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings of work. Brewer walked one and struck out four. After his exit, Bryan Henry allowed three runs in 3.2 frames, Mike DeMark worked a scoreless eighth, and Jensen Lewis allowed two runs in the ninth.
The win went to Express starter Martin Perez (6-6), who scattered a run on just six hits over eight frames.
Offensively for the Aces, Schmidt and Adam Eaton recorded Reno's lone multi-hit efforts. The Aces were hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 on base.
The Aces and Express hook-up again on Thursday night at Aces Ballpark. LHP Zach Kroenke (6-3, 5.49 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Round Rock will counter with LHP Zach Jackson (6-12, 4.66 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT, and it'll be another Coors Light Thirsty Thursday™ presented by ESPN Radio 94.5 FM and Reno News & Review.
