Dozens of first-generation Americans -- from low-income families -- who plan to attend the University of Nevada were honored today.
54 high school juniors and seniors just completed the Dean's Future Scholars Youth College Internship Program.
They were recognized during a reception on the university campus Wednesday.
The program follows them from the sixth grade all the way into college, and helps provide them with academic and emotional support.
"Every time we have this event it just reminds us that we're doing a good job, that program is helping them succeed. We have introduced them to the university and now they feel comfortable and welcome here," says Jennifer Zarco.
Almost 350 Washoe County students are currently enrolled in the Outreach Program, but they can only take 50 new students a year.
