Nevada retailers predict an increase in back-to-school spending this year.
The Retail Association of Nevada says about 355,000 households in Nevada have children in elementary or high school. Based on national trends, the industry group estimates Nevadans will spend about $245 million on clothing and supplies, an increase of 15.4% over last year.
Spending for college-bound students is also expected to rise in Nevada this year to $134 million, up $14 million from last year.
The retail group also estimates 40% of back-to-school shopping will be conducted over the Internet, nearly double the 2007 estimate. But discount stores are expected to be the most popular choice, accounting for 67% of sales. (AP)
