Cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Reported

Posted: Updated:

A rare strain of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is making its way through the Truckee Meadows.

The Washoe County Health District says more than 400 HFMD cases have been reported this year. The disease is a common illness in children five years old and younger.

Symptoms include painful sores on the hands, feet and mouth and a loss of appetite and dehydration may result. Fever is another symptom as well, and it's also very contagious during the first week.

The health district is urging everyone to practice good hygiene to limit the spread of the disease.

The Washoe County School District is also alerting parents since the traditional school year starts in two weeks.
