Aces Edge Iowa, 2-1

Posted: Updated:

Cole Gillespie lined a single up the middle in the top of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon, chasing home A.J. Pollock with the go-ahead run in a 2-1 Reno Aces victory over the Iowa Cubs in the series opener at Principal Park.

In a game that remained scoreless through six innings, the Cubs finally broke through in the seventh, taking a 1-0 lead. But the Aces would respond, quickly tying the game in the eighth on a two-out RBI single for Josh Bell. In the ninth, Pollock led-off the inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error. That set the stage for Gillespie, who knocked home Pollock with the eventual game-winner.

Aces starter Brad Bergesen took a no decision in his Reno debut, dealing 3.2 scoreless frames with three strikeouts. After his exit, Bryan Henry tossed 2.1 shutout innings, and Mike DeMark allowed an unearned run in his lone frame. Jensen Lewis (4-1) worked a scoreless eighth and earned the win, before Bryan Shaw came on in the ninth and nailed down his second save in as many days.

Iowa starter Casey Coleman worked six scoreless innings, scattering two hits with eight strikeouts. The loss fell to Cubs reliever Esmailin Caridad (0-4), who was responsible for Pollock's run in the final frame.

At the dish for Reno, Bell led the way with two hits and an RBI. Adam Eaton and Tyler Bortnick doubled in a six-hit Aces effort.

The series continues on Monday night. RHP Trevor Bauer (4-0, 2.90 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Iowa will counter with RHP Frankie De La Cruz (1-5, 3.83 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PT at Principal Park, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM or by visiting RenoAces.com.

The Aces return to Downtown Reno on Aug. 10 to kick-off an eight-game homestand. Tickets are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
