26-year-old Jonathan Blunk of Sparks was one of the 12 people killed in that tragic Colorado movie theater shooting two weeks ago.
Friday, family and friends laid him to rest at the Mountain View Mortuary on Stoker Avenue.
We spoke with his friend James Gill. He served three tours of duty with Blunk in the Navy. He said Blunk was a very unique and special person.
"You can't place him in a typical category," said Gill. "He wanted to serve his country, he wanted to serve other people. He always put other people before himself. He had no negativity in him, everything was positive."
Gill said he met Blunk in 2008.
He said after serving in the Navy, Blunk decided to get his criminal justice degree, in hopes of becoming a police officer.
However, because of all the cuts, Blunk became a certified EMT firefighter instead.
Gill said what he loved to do more than anything, though, was serve his country.
Blunk, all the way up until his death, wanted to go back to the military and become a Navy Seal.
He left behind two young children, a boy and a girl. Gill said they will both know who their father was.
"When maximums gets a little bit older, like 13 years old and also his daughter Haley, we're going to bring ht em out to Colorado and show them the kind of man their dad was and show them what he stood for. We're going to make sure those kids are raised right."
