Prosecutors in Douglas County have filed misdemeanor criminal charges against a mother and son in connection with a wildfire that destroyed two homes and 17 outbuildings in a rural neighborhood in May.
Deputy District Attorney Tom Gregory says 56-year-old Kim Carlin and 30-year-old Steven Cozad were arrested Thursday. Each is charged with one count of willful or negligent failure to guard or extinguish a fire. The offense carries a possible penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Investigators at the time said they believed the fire that broke out May 22 and burned 7,500 acres near the Nevada-California line was caused by an illegal backyard burn that reignited.
Carlin and Cozad were booked and released after posting bail. An arraignment date was set for Aug. 27. (AP)
