Court Hearing Tuesday on Nevada Tax Initiative

Posted: Updated:

A state judge is set to consider arguments on whether a business tax initiative being pushed by the teachers union and the Nevada AFL-CIO should proceed.

The Associated Press reports the Education Initiative would impose a 2% margins tax on businesses that gross more than $1 million annually. Supporters say it would generate about $800 million annually and make more money available for K-12 education.

A lawsuit filed by a coalition of business groups challenges the legality of the measure, arguing that it is deceptive and violates the single-subject rule for ballot measures.

District Judge James Wilson will hear arguments Tuesday in Carson City.

If the initiative stands, backers will need to collect more than 72,000 signatures by Nov. 13 to send the issue to the 2013 Legislature or voters in 2014.  (AP)
