This Saturday is all about celebrating diversity in Downtown Reno, with the third annual Community Pride Parade. This year, support from locals could mean a boost for one community organization with a very big goal.
The 'Build Our Center' initiative is a group of locals that came together to create a safe space for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. They said there is nothing to fill that need in the Truckee Meadows right now, and they hope to change that.
"Our long-term vision is to have a place for really everyone in the community," Build Our Center President Jeromy Manke said, "where they can come and receive help, or find resources for other community organizations."
The Build Our Center board members meet every week to discuss how to rally support and awareness for their cause. They plan to create a community center that would be open to all ages and demographics, and offer counseling and support, educational programs, and social activities.
The goal is to have a center set up within the next few years, but first, they are spreading the word, to drum up support and raise funds.
"It seems like the more we get out there and the more we spread the word about our mission and the organization, the more positive feedback that we get," Manke said.
