Reno Down Sky Sox, 17-9

Posted: Updated:

RENO, Nev.—A six-run first and an eight-spot in the fifth propelled the Reno Aces to a 17-9 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox Wednesday night at Aces Ballpark.

The Aces fell into an early 3-0 hole, but answered with six runs in the bottom of the first—matching a club record for first-inning runs. The Sky Sox, though, would battle back, eventually retaking the lead at 8-6.  In the fifth, though, Reno would go ahead for good—bringing 12 men to the plate, collecting eight hits and scoring eight times to take a commanding lead.

With the win, Reno moves to 7.5 games ahead of second-place Colorado Springs in the Pacific North Division.

The Aces' 17 runs set a season-high and tied for the second-most in franchise history. Six Reno batters had two or more hits, six scored at least two runs and five recorded a multi-RBI effort.

Charles Brewer (6-6) earned the win for Reno, scattering eight runs—five earned—on eight hits through five innings. After his exit, three Aces relievers combined to hold the Sky Sox to just one unearned run over the game's final four frames.

The loss fell to Sky Sox starter Rob Scahill (8-10), who allowed 11 runs—10 earned—on 10 hits over 4.1 frames.

The Aces and Sky Sox will get back at it again on Thursday night at Aces Ballpark. LHP Patrick Corbin (3-2, 3.11 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Colorado Springs counters with LHP Nick Schmidt (2-2, 6.55 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PT.
