State Allocates Funds for Rural Community Development
Nearly $2.2 million from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds have been allocated to 27 different rural projects, the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) announced today. This year's CDBG projects will benefit 119,172 Nevadans in 11 counties and 6 small incorporated cities, with much of the funding used to improve water and sewer facilities as well as other infrastructure projects in rural communities.
Nevada's CDBG grants are approved by the Governor and awarded in late June/early July. The grants are given to and managed by units of local government. Applications for the 2013 program year will be due to the Governor's Office of Economic Development in mid-January 2013.
Projects receiving CDBG funding in rural Nevada this year include:
Caliente: $85,000 for a splitter screen to protect the sewer system; will benefit 969 people.
Caliente: $90,000 to upgrade pool complex and provide accessibility; will benefit 969 people.
Churchill County: $250,000 to construct a food pantry; will benefit 5,612 people.
Ely: $197,000 to upgrade the Center Street water main; will benefit 669 people.
Esmeralda County: $52,300 to improve the Fishlake Valley community center water system; will benefit 522 people.
Fernley: $135,000 to construct sidewalks on Hardie Lane; will benefit 4,646 people.
Fernley: $50,000 to provide business counseling to microenterprises; will benefit 24 small businesses.
Lincoln County: $147,000 to improve the Pahranagat Valley Senior Center; will benefit 194 people.
Lincoln County: $45,000 to rehabilitate single-family housing; will benefit 3 households.
Lyon County: $66,000 to improve the Silver City water system; will benefit 659 people.
Lyon County: $45,000 to create utility maps for Silver Springs; will benefit 6,553 people.
Lyon County: $50,000 to provide businesses with small loans; will benefit 3 businesses.
Nye County: $123,777 to reline the Gabbs water tank; will benefit 479 people.
Nye County: $20,000 to train new volunteers for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA); will benefit 80 children.
Pershing County: $48,500 to rehabilitate the Imlay sewer system; will benefit 161 people.
Storey County: $152,000 to enhance the swimming pool to accommodate people who are disabled; benefit 659 people.
Storey County: $40,000 to secure funding for shelter for people who are homeless; will benefit 629 people.
Washoe County: $76,087 to create a continuous walkway to Lois Allen Elementary school; will benefit 5,653 adults and children.
Washoe County: $15,000 to provide training on how to reduce impediments to fair housing; will benefit 72,126 people.
Wells: $167,226 to extend water line for a back-up water supply; will benefit 1,385 people.
Wells: $96,756 to purchase a backup generator to power the water system; will benefit 1,385 people.
West Wendover: $62,620 boulevard enhancement to increase pedestrian and bicycle access; will benefit 4,724 people.
West Wendover: $15,000 to development a community assessment; will benefit 4,724 people.
Humboldt County: $34,000 to create a utilities master plan in McDermitt; will benefit 321 people.
Mineral County: $33,360 to create a water master plan for Mina and Luning; will benefit 2,667.
White Pine County: $15,000 to develop leadership abilities in rural Nevada; will benefit 969 people.
Yerington: $59,100 to provide an analysis of the sewer system; will benefit 2,387 people
