Artown Reaches Halfway Point

Posted: Updated:

Time sure flies, because Artown 2012 has already reached its halfway point.

The 31-day event is still providing live music and entertainment to the Downtown Reno area.

Art Paws took over the McKinley Arts and Culture Center Sunday, with dogs of all shapes and sizes in one spot.

"We're dog people and we definitely always try to hit this one every year to see the different breeds and products that are out there," says Paul Shogren. "Just kind of get out in the sunshine."

Artown organizers are thrilled seeing so many of these events packed full of people.

"It's been unbelievable," says Artown's executive director Beth Macmillan. "I am so proud of our community for coming out to everything that has been offered."

Macmillan says last year's Artown had a direct local impact of $14 million, a number organizers are working hard to top.

"Turnout has been fantastic," she says. "We will only have a true count after the festival when we've tallied up all those numbers. All I can tell you is that the events have been filled to capacity."

Amy Shogren tell us Artown offers more variety of shows this year, attracting a wider demographic.

"I think the weather has been helpful, it's not nearly as hot as it has been," she says. "People are getting out and enjoying what's going on in Artown."

Macmillan says it's events like Art Paws and Saturday night's Pops on the River which continue bringing people back for more.

"It was awesome. The place was packed," she says. "The singers were amazing. The orchestra sounded phenomenal, the choir."

The first half of Artown has been a huge success, with the local community stepping up in such a big way.

"We do reach out to people in California and the surrounding areas, but I think this is a great opportunity for the local people to enjoy our community and the things it has to offer," says Amy.
