Places 2 Check Out: Un Caffe Italian Bistro

Posted: Updated:

It's a perfect place for a neighborhood Italian restaurant in South Meadows and that's exactly what Cheri Rhodes is offering with her latest restaurant, Un Caffe Italian Bistro. "I live two miles down the road. And when we would want to go to dinner we'd say we have to get in the car and drive to downtown for good food and so I wanted to bring that here."

Let's start with breakfast. Un Caffe opens at 7am for you to come grab a coffee and pastry on your way to work or school. In fact, it was her time in Italy ordering coffee that inspired the name. "I fell in love with the whole experience of walking in up to the bar and you just say "un caffe" and your shot of espresso comes out."

The pastry is handmade every morning and the coffee comes directly from Italy.  "It's the second oldest roaster in Italy. Fillicori Zecchini and the first time I tasted their coffee I fell in love with it and said I have to have it."

Next to the bakery is the main dining room of Un Caffe. An upbeat Italian motif with a bar that stretches down much of the side wall. And it's here that people can order off the piccolini menu from 3:30 to 6pm. It's a bar menu that offers unique options like the Asian duck sliders. It's a braised duck with housemade steamed buns and with wasabi coleslaw.

For dinner you might want to try the bucatini carbonara. It's topped with a raw egg that cooks from the heat of the pasta. Made just like they do it in Rome.

In 2009, Cheri graduated with honors from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park which is the best culinary school in the country. And she decided on this little corner of Reno to share her Italian creations with all of us.

Un Caffe Italian Bistro is located at 9333 Double R Boulevard, next to Jazmin.  For more information, call 775-853-7801 or go online to www.uncaffeitalianbistro.com
