New Jobless Claims in Nevada Fall in June

Posted: Updated:

State officials say the number of people filing for new jobless benefits in Nevada fell year-over-year for the 31st straight month.

The Associated Press report state economist Bill Anderson says nearly 17,000 initial claims were filed last month, down 13% from June 2011. That's the biggest drop so far this year.

The number of initial claims is much lower than it was a few years ago. The number peaked at more than 36,000 in December 2008.

Anderson said on Thursday that while new claim filings continue falling, the pace of declines has slowed, indicating Nevada's unemployment activity may be stabilizing.

Still, joblessness in Nevada remains the highest in the nation, and Anderson says job growth likely will remain slower than what the state experienced before the recession.  (AP)
