Students started class Monday at five area elementary schools located within the Washoe County School District. These students attend Brown, Double Diamond, Mathews, Spanish Springs, and Van Gorder elementary schools, which observe year-round class schedules.
"We are anxious to welcome our students back to class," said Jennifer Van Tress, principal at Van Gorder Elementary School. "Staff members have been working hard during the break to prepare our classrooms and our school for another year of teaching and learning."
"We all look forward to the first day of school," said Melissa Olsen, principal at Mathews Elementary School. "It's an exciting time for everyone-teachers, staff, and students alike."
Because most people expect students to come back to school in late August, the Washoe County School Police Department is also issuing warnings and citations to drivers who violate traffic laws near schools during the summer months.
"It's a good time to remind drivers that these schools are in session, and ask them to watch out for our students who are heading to and from school in the morning, at lunchtime, and in the afternoon," said School Police Chief Mike Mieras. "They may not be expecting to see children in the crosswalks and on the sidewalks during the summer months, so they need to be careful when they're driving in school zones."
The following school schedules are also in effect in coming weeks:
--Huffaker and Anderson elementary school students return to class on Monday, July 16. --Students at the 18 schools which observe the single-track green schedule go back to class on Monday, July 23. These schools are: Allen, Beasley, Booth, Cannan, Corbett, Duncan, Gomes, Hall, Loder, Picollo, Sepulveda, Silver Lake, Alice Smith, Sun Valley, Taylor, Veterans Memorial, Winnemucca, and Smithridge elementary schools.
--Students at Incline and Natchez schools return to class on Monday, August 20.
--Students who attend schools under the traditional calendar go back to school on Monday, August 27.
