Aces Rally Late, But Fall 9-8 Sky Sox

Posted: Updated:

After nearly a two-hour rain dealy, Cole Gillespie homered and finished with three hits Saturday night, but a fourth-inning Colorado Springs grand slam pushed the Sky Sox to a 9-8 victory over the Reno Aces at Security Service Field.

With game knotted at 2-2 in the fourth, Sky Sox starting pitcher Edwar Cabrera hit a two-out grand slam, giving Colorado Springs a 6-4 lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Reno scored three runs in the ninth and put the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first, but Ryan Budde grounded into a double play that thwarted the rally and ended the ballgame.

Aces starter Charles Brewer (4-6) took the loss, surrendering eight runs—four earned—on nine hits over five innings of work. After his exit, Sam Demel and Jensen Lewis combined to hold the Sky Sox to just a run over the game's final three frames.

Cabrera (2-0) collected the win, scattering four runs on seven hits through five innings.

At the plate for Reno, Gillespie hit a solo homer in the second and finished a triple shy of the cycle with two runs scored and two driven in. Adam Eaton doubled twice and singled, scoring two runs. Ryan Wheeler drove in his Minor League best 88th run of the season.

The Aces and Sky Sox will finish-up the season's unofficial first half with a Sunday matinee at Security Service Field. RHP Barry Enright (7-5, 5.66 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Colorado Springs counters with RHP Rob Scahill (6-9, 5.99 ERA). First pitch from Security Service Field is set for 12:05 p.m. PT, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM or by visiting RenoAces.com.

The Aces will return to Aces Ballpark on July 12 to take-on the Salt Lake Bees. Tickets are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
