COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Ryan Wheeler set a club record for RBIs before the All-Star Break on Friday night, leading the Reno Aces to an 8-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field.
Despite a pair of rain delays, the Aces scored in six-different innings, and three Reno pitchers combined to hold the Sky Sox to just one run. The Aces now have won two-straight in this series and five of their last six overall.
Wheeler doubled twice and hit a solo home run in the third, finishing with four RBIs. That pushed his season RBI total to 87—tops in the Minor Leagues and two more than any Aces hitter has ever had prior to the All-Star Break.
Conrad Flynn (1-0)—promoted from Advanced-A Visalia this morning—earned his first-career Triple-A victory, tossing four shutout innings in relief of starter Tyler Skaggs, who worked three scoreless frames of his own.
The loss fell to Sky Sox starter Nick Schmidt (0-2), who surrendered four runs on six hits over five innings.
In addition to Wheeler's exploits at the plate, Mike Jacobs and Cole Gillespie homered for Reno. A.J. Pollock had three hits out of the lead-off spot.
The series will continue on Saturday night in Colorado Springs. RHP Charles Brewer (4-5, 5.83 ERA) takes the ball for the Aces, while LHP Edwar Cabrera (1-0, 1.35 ERA) counters for the Sky Sox. First pitch from Security Service Field is set for 5:05 p.m. PT.
