Places 2 Check Out: Zagol, Ethiopian Restaurant

Posted: Updated:

It's like stepping into Shita Yenenh's home town in Ethiopia. Her restaurant on East Fourth Street is decorated from handmade items straight from Africa. "I was collecting this for the last 30 something years that I live because this is what I want to do for a long, long time. So most of the decorations came from out of my house."

Zagol is authentic Ethiopian food. If you have no idea what that means, Shita says it's not like Indian or Asian food. Ethiopian food is a taste all its own. Unique and flavorful. In fact, Shita goes to Ethiopia every two years to buy her spices. "I try to bring my own culture, my own dream to the people in Reno to the American people."

The most popular item on the menu is called zilzil tibs. It's tender marinated beef sauteed lightly in purified herbal butter and seasoned with onion and fresh rosemary. And the kids will love it because you eat with your hands. You rip off a piece of the teff bread and use it to grab some salad, onions and beef. A mouthful of flavor."

In Ethiopia, they make honey wine. It's a special drink for weddings or special get togethers. You can try it at Zagol as well. And to top of your meal, be sure to try the coffee which Shita roasts on the stove herself. Everything at Zagol is as authentic as a trip to Africa. And even though it's had some hard times over the past few years, Shita is dedicated to keeping it open. "Just don't want to let go. It's my dream. To own a restaurant to serve in a restaurant, cooking is my dream. I love to cook and I love talking to people."
