Firefighters are currently battling a brushfire in the Caughlin Ranch area. The 75-acre Pinehaven Fire off Lakeridge Drive is moving uphill away from homes and is 50% contained.
Crews are battling the fire on the ground and from the air. "Air assets are absolutely critical in this kind of topography. As you can see, it's fairly steep and that's a lot more efficient than trying to put firefighters on that steep terrain. You can do a lot more firefighting with the aircraft," says Truckee Meadows Fire Protection Chief Charles Moore.
A Washoe County Sheriff's Office spokesman says a car sparked the initial blaze. He says a deputy was following a driver who failed to yield and then ran off in the dirt. The car kept moving, eventually crashed and ignited nearby brush. Witnesses told authorities they heard a loud boom and then saw the fire, believing something inside the car blew up.
The fire started fairly close to homes but burned in the opposite direction.
That is something that comes as a relief to area residents, especially after last year's Caughlin Fire burned more than 30 homes.
"I woke up at 2:30 in the morning with it burning parallel down Skyline by my house and it was pretty frightening. This is real good to see the plume going straight up. I think they'll be able to get a ring around it," says Norah Sliger.
Maree Debard adds, "We're sad to see this happen but you know, you have to be grateful for nobody being hurt and no structures being hurt and I just hope they get it contained in a hurry."
The unidentified suspect remains on the loose. He's described as a white man, about 5'10", wearing a white tank top and tan shorts. If you have any information on his whereabouts, call Secret Witness at 322-4900 or text your tip to 847411. Your call will remain anonymous.
