President Obama Views Fire Damage in Colorado

Posted: Updated:

President Barack Obama surveyed damage from raging wildfires in Colorado Friday from aboard Air Force One. On the ground he was briefed by the state's governor and others leading the wildfire response effort. And took a walking tour of the Mountain Shadows neighborhood that was scorched by the waldo canyon fire.

Obama declared a "major disaster" in the state early Friday and promised federal aid.

Colorado is one of the nation's top swing states and expected to be heavily contested by Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney this year.

Firefighters say the Waldo Canyon Fire has burned 26 square miles, down from their earlier estimate of 29 square miles. More precise mapping often results in revisions of size estimates for active fires.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Pete Carey says one person is reported missing at the same home where human remains were found.

Carey says authorities are trying to track down "less than 10" people who may be unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross has deployed several of its volunteers to Colorado to assist with relief efforts.

Many of these volunteers are local, coming from the Reno-Sparks area, Incline Village, as well as Elko. They will help with evacuation shelters for the many residents displaced by those wildfires.
