Jerry Sandusky Guilty on 45 of 48 Counts

Posted: Updated:

A Pennsylvania jury has found Jerry Sandusky guilty on 45 of 48 counts of sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say the 68-year-old former Penn State assistant football coach abused 10 boys over 15 years.

Jurors delivered the verdict around 7pm LOCAL TIME after deliberating for more than 21 hours. The judge then revoked his bail and ordered his arrest. He faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced in about 90 days.

The panel heard from eight accusers who say Sandusky molested them. They also heard about two other alleged victims whose identities remain unknown to investigators.

Sandusky denied the charges, but he never took the stand in his own defense. Instead, his attorney Joe Amendola tried to discredit investigators and suggested the accusers' were lying.

In his closing arguments, Amendola said: "The system decided Mr. Sandusky was guilty and the system set out to convict him."

The defense also presented character witnesses including Sandusky's wife, who testified she never saw any inappropriate contact between her husband and boys.

But the prosecution's star witness, former Penn State Assistant Coach Mike McQueary, testified he saw sandusky abusing a young boy in a campus shower.

The defense questioned why McQueary failed to stop what he thought was an attack, and didn't call police.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly is thanking the accusers who testified, calling them "brave men."

She says the trial was forced on them and that she hopes the verdict "helps these victims heal ... and helps other victims of abuse to come forward."

On Thursday, a lawyer for one of Sandusky's six adopted children said he told authorities his father abused him while growing up.

Matt Sandusky's lawyer issued a statement saying Matt was 'a victim of Jerry's Sandusky's abuse,' but didn't go into specfics. His lawyer said the 33-year-old had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors at his father's trial, but didn't take the stand.

The statement was released after jurors had started deliberating the case.

Prosecutors say Sandusky found victims through his charity for at-risk children, The Second Mile. They say he gave them gifts and took them on trips as he groped them or forced them into sex.

Defense attorneys say accusers are out for money and that investigators inappropriately shared details among witnesses. (AP)
