A group of activists hopes to turn Carson City's historic, now-shuttered Nevada State Prison into a museum and tourist attraction akin to Alcatraz.
Myron Carpenter tells the Nevada Appeal he and other supporters want to get NSP listed on the national register of historic places, and says they're also working to form a 501c3 non-profit corporation to raise money for the plan.
The prison closed in January and was officially decommissioned May 18. It opened as the Nevada Territorial Prison in 1862 and is one of the oldest penitentiaries west of the Mississippi.
But renovating the site could cost tens of millions of dollars. It would need elevators and other upgrades to accommodate people with disabilities, and may need a pricey fire sprinkler system.
