Online Credit Card Complaint Database Debuts

Posted: Updated:

A new online credit card complaint database launched Tuesday.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau site will publicly post how a bank or card issuer handled complaints.

A bureau official says the agency created the web-site to promote transparency and efficiency.

Banking trade groups are wary of the concept.

They say base-less complaints could be hard to separate from legitimate ones.

But the bureau says no complaint will be posted online until the alleged offender confirms it did business with the consumer.

Banks and financial institutions will have 15 days to respond to a complaint and 60 days to act on it.

And officials say they will only post grievances lodged since June first.

So far, they have received approximately 100 complaints this month.

The website will eventually include grievances regarding mortgages and student loans.
