Reno Rodeo First Performance Results On Friday

Posted: Updated:

From the Reno Rodeo:

RENO, NEV.; June 15, 2012 --- When a professional saddle bronc rider sees his name next to Kool Toddy on the draw list, it's with mixed emotions.

"When the draw comes out, you're really excited to have her," said one cowboy who won a national title on the great bucking horse. "And the closer the rodeo gets, the more you worry about what you'll have to do to stay on her."

Former college standout Jacobs Crawley of College Station, Texas might have been worried on Friday night when the famous bay mare took her time leaving the chute, but he made the ride count during the opening performance of the Reno Rodeo, combining with the queen of broncs for 84 points and a commanding lead in the first round.

The phenomenal horse is owned by Bend Rodeo Company and Flying Five Rodeo Company. Cowboys who made the whistle on her have earned more than $1 million in the past decade, and she's been assigned to the elite 10th round of the NFR every year since 2004. Kool Toddy's responsible for more arena records and go-round wins than virtually any other bronc on the road.

In team roping, Fallon's Jade Corkill thrilled Nevada fans by stopping the clock in 6.0 seconds. He and header Kaleb Driggers of Georgia had notched a 5.6-second run earlier in slack to take the lead in both the first round and average in the team roping standings at Reno.

For the second straight year, Reno Rodeo defending bareback riding champion Tilden Hooper set the pace in the first performance. His 82 points on Flying Five's bronc Spy matched the 82-point score put up by world champion Bobby Mote to give the two men the early lead in the first round.

In tie-down roping, defending world champion Tuf Cooper didn't disappoint on Friday, roping two calves in 16.9 seconds to beat out Blair Burk and Cody Ohl for the average lead and a great chance at a Reno championship.

Kelli Tolbert of Hooper, Utah, took the first-round lead in barrel racing during slack with a 17.66-second run – then a disastrous five-second penalty kept her from also going to the lead in round two with a 17.26. Instead, the lead in the second round fell to Fallon Taylor of Texas with her time of 17.27.

Reno Rodeo contestants compete in two preliminary rounds with the top 12 in each event coming back for the June 23 short round. The $2.1 million, 10-day rodeo boasts almost 700 contestants and roughly 140,000 fans, and is a Gold stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour.

The second performance begins at 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are available at www.renorodeo.com or by calling 800-325-7328. For more information, please call 775-329-3877.
