In a recent Penny Stock Detectives article, editor Sasha Cekerevac argues innovation is the key to growth in the technology industry because customers want the newest and most advanced features for their devices. Cekerevac believes one technology stock, creating new motion sensor devices integrated with mobile devices, could be set for a strong move up.

InvenSense provides motion sensors for gaming consoles, phones, tablets, and other electronic devices manufactured by technology stocks such as Nintendo.

The stock is relatively new, as it went public just last fall, notes Cekerevac. It has had a roller-coaster ride in terms of price movement: a low of $8.25 and a high of $22.35. Recent corporate earnings were less than expected, but this doesn’t mean that this company is in deep trouble; it could provide an opportunity for the long-term investor, believes Cekerevac.

The company issued guidance and reaffirmed full fiscal year growth of 40–50%. Many technology stocks like InvenSense rely on other electronic component makers. Part of the problem this quarter was, according to the company, shortages of chips from QUALCOMM. These chips are used in “4G LTE” smartphones. The lack of one part means the whole phone can’t be made and is delayed into a future quarter.

While some technology stocks have done well, InvenSense has lagged the market.

According to the Penny Stock Detectives article, technology stocks that can innovate and provide new features are ones that Cekerevac would watch over the next decade: “While corporate earnings were hurt this quarter, I’d want to see how the firm rebounds next quarter.”

Cekerevac says that if we see a resumption of corporate earnings growth, then the stock should be able to break out of its slump. One worry, though, is the slowing global economy, as this will put pressure on all technology stocks. According to the editor, while people may want the latest video console or phone, if they are unable to afford it due to unemployment, this will delay InvenSense’s sales and crimp corporate earnings.

“At this point,” says Cekerevac, “there are many crosswinds for all technology stocks, but I would put InvenSense on my watch list for the future.”
