A fast-moving fire destroyed two homes in Fernley.
The fire broke out around 4:00 Sunday afternoon behind a couple of homes on G Street. Firefighters say it started in a canal next to a fence but it grew fast.
"When we arrived, the fire quickly began moving into a shed got into the trees and ultimately ended up in the two structures," says N. Lyon County Fire District Fire Chief Darryl Cleveland.
One of the homes was vacant but the second was not -- luckily that family was able to get out safely. The Red Cross is helping the family.
One firefighter hurt his back while fighting the fire. No one else was hurt.
Both homes are total losses.
Firefighters are looking into reports of kids seen running from the area around the time the fire broke out.
