Wind Contributed to Lake Tahoe Skydiver's Death

Posted: Updated:

Police say wind contributed to the death of a 28-year-old skydiver at Lake Tahoe last month.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's office determined offshore winds prevented Robert Ranieri III from reaching his intended landing site.

He was one of three experienced skydivers who jumped from a helicopter on May 22. They aimed for the shoreline near Camp Richardson but ended up in the water.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reported Friday that Ranieri was the last one out of the helicopter and was the farthest away from the shore when he jumped. The other two skydivers were rescued.

Ranieri was a South Lake Tahoe resident. His body was recovered near Camp Richardson and Pope Beach.

The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to conclude its investigation into the accident.
