Dr. Victoria Casteneda is the first pediatric hematologist/oncologist ever to call Renown a permanent home. She specializes in children with cancer and specifically diseases of cells originating from the bone marrow. Before Dr. Castaneda, visiting physicians from California came up three days a week. Dr. Castaneda will now be here 24/7. "Families won't have to travel real far; they won't have to be separated during this entire process. When you have everything here and we are able to provide quality healthcare here for the people here in Reno and families have their support here."

Renown's Children's Hospital is a major priority of the hospital. It has the equipment to handle treating and curing children with cancer. But it needed the lead physician to run the program and expand it. That's the goal of Dr. Castaneda. But even now, Renown can handle many types of childhood cancers. "We do see lymphomas. We see kidney tumors, brain tumors and other rare tumors. So at this point we can treat all of this type of cancer now."

And treating childhood cancers, in Reno, means keeping families together.
