Firefighters Say Fire Danger Worst In 20 Years

Dry vegetation combined with windy weather is a recipe for fire danger here in Northern Nevada.

Firefighters are very concerned. They say they have not seen these dry of conditions in nearly 20 years.

"We didn't have a lot of snow pack to knock down a lot of the grasses and then we didn't have a lot of new growth," said Paul Peterson with the Bureau of Land Management. "So we still have a lot of old, standing grasses from last year that are out there."

Peterson said that vegetation is highly flammable. The problem is one spark, with this kind of wind in that brush, can spread in a hurry.

So here are some things you can do to prevent a wildfire:

  • Always bring a shovel and water when making a campfire.
  • When you are done with campfires, make sure it is out and cold.
  • If you smoke, never throw the cigarette outside.

Peterson said they do have resources on standby in case they are needed.

"We have all of our engines and aircraft staffed right now all across Nevada. We've been battling quite a few different fires, so we shift our resources around to where the highest need is as well as where the danger is."
