It's been said that timing is everything. And when it comes to our primary election, TMCC Political Science Professor Fred Lokken certainly thinks it makes a difference. Nevada's primary used to be in September and the general in November. That tightened up the campaign season. In 2005, the Nevada Legislature moved it to August and in 2009 they moved it to June. Lokken says that just doesn't serve the voters.
"They moved it in Nevada because the political parties pushed them to. They complained they didn't have enough time to get updated information for the general. But look at it. June is the end of the traditional school year and families are dealing with graduations. It's the beginning of the summer and that takes some out of the area. So no one is here to research the races and to vote," he says.
He says moving it to September would serve the people and democracy instead of the parties.
