Sparks police have identified Monday's accidental shooting victim as 13-year-old Alondra Cervantes.
It happened around 3:00 Monday afternoon at the Meadows Apartments on Prater Way. Police say the girl was shot by her 17-year-old brother.
When police first arrived on the scene they were told that a man came through the window, shot the girl and then escaped through the window. Eventually the girl's 17-year-old brother admitted he shot her accidentally. Police recovered a firearm from the bushes outside the apartment.
Friends of the Dilworth Middle School 8th grader quickly learned about the death and gathered at the scene waiting for answers.
"We would do basically everything together, she was like my sister," said 14-year-old Angela Mora. "She was a really sweet girl that everybody loved and she was just basically there for everyone."
Police brought in volunteers from the Trauma Intervention Program to comfort the girl's family. Volunteer Bill Graham said they help where police and emergency crews sometimes cant.
"Our main purpose is to give emotional support to the families of victims and give them resources they can use to deal with the tragedy they're going through," Graham told us.
Neighbors and those who know the family say it's just a tragic event, that hits too close to home.
"I think it was accidental," Mora said. "She wasn't supposed to be gone."
Police say the suspect will be charged with involuntary manslaughter and minor in possession of a firearm.
