There are also quite a few events to honor our soldiers.
Veterans held a wreath-laying ceremony on Friday. The ceremony was held at the Sky Peaks Retirement Community on Sky Valley Drive in Reno. World War II Veterans we spoke with say they get emotional when they think about those they served with, who have passed.
"We lost one last year and one two years before that," said Simonne Potvin, a Navy Waves Veteran. "It hurts, it's all of a sudden."
Many of the people who live at Sky Peaks Retirement Home are veterans.
Meanwhile, the Carson City chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America held a bingo tournament fundraiser at the Carson Nugget on Friday, as well. The money will help fund a traveling Vietnam Memorial's visit to Carson City in October.
Virginia City hosted a Heroes Parade Saturday afternoon, straight through the Comstock on C Street. Dozens of entrants marched along the street, which included veterans groups, classic cars and horses. Quentin McColl of Dayton, who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, served as Grand Marshal.
The Fleet Reserve Association Branch and Unit 274 hosted an event on Sunday at Rock Park at noon. It included an Honor Guard, guest speaker, along with a wreath placement in the Truckee River to commemorate our fallen soldiers.
Monday:
The American Legion Post #1 will host a 9 a.m. ceremony at the Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery, located on Angel and 10th streets in Reno.
There will be a service at the Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery on 2700 North Virginia Street in Reno at 10:30 a.m.
A ceremony will be held 11 a.m. at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery on 14 Veterans Way in Fernley. Keynote speaker is retired Marine, Lieutenant General Martin Brandtner.
At the Mountain View Cemetery on 435 Stoker Avenue in northwest Reno, a ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. It includes the Silver Dollar Chorus, and guest speakers, including representatives from Senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller.
The Sierra Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Lemmon Drive will have a ceremony that begins at 11 a.m. Guest speakers will include Nevada Air National Guard Colonel Leslie Gonzalez and Washoe County Commissioner Kitty Jung.
The Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary of Reno-Sparks will host a Memorial Day observance from 11 a.m. It will be held in the courtyard of 1931 Sutro Street in Reno. After the observance, there will be a free family barbecue and games until about 1 p.m.
In Carson City, there will be a ceremony at 1 p.m. in the veterans section of the Lone Mountain Cemetery on 1044 Beverly Drive.
Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace will host a Memorial Day Peace Virgil at 5:30 p.m. at the Bruce R. Thompson Courthouse and Federal Building on 400 South Virginia Street in Reno. It will includes readings, music and discussion.
