Highly-trained dogs like Bailey and Ruby, a former police dog, use their heightened sense of smell to seek out bed bugs in hotels, schools, luggage and even homes.
"We use dogs because...about 90% accurate," says Brad Delk.
At the Cimex Service Solutions facility in West Sacramento, trainers hide live bed bugs - in a container - thankfully - and then - send in the hounds...
"Bring in the dog...when they find a live bed bug, they are going to sit and indicate and then get rewarded with their ball."
Bed bugs live in small, dark areas like mattresses, furniture and flooring.
And will leave itchy bumps on the skin after sucking human blood - usually while you sleep.
The key to beating these pesky pests is to be proactive. Get regular testing and call a professional.
"You have to use heat, steam, chemicals...really hard to get rid of.
Detection services could cost about $300-$400, but could save you thousands in the long run.
