Cooling off in a swimming pool is one of spring and summer's great joys. But sometimes, running around at the pool creates severe injuries.13-year-old Joey Rubin found that out the hard way in his own backyard. "I was running from edge to edge and I tripped and I hit the edge of our pool which is flagstone."
Joey ended up in an operating room for a two-and-a-half hour surgery. Luckily, foot and ankle specialist Dr. Marvin Brown was able to salvage the function of Joey's right foot and ankle. He repaired tendons and nerves, and Joey will spend a few weeks in this external fixator before moving on to a boot.
When it comes to pool safety, the risk isn't just drowning, it's falling. "Slipping on water around the pool seems to be common. Use common sense and appropriate caution. If the pool decking is wet, don't run on it," says Dr. Brown.
