RENO, Nev.—Adam Eaton doubled and drove in two runs, but an early deficit and a late rally were too much for the Aces to overcome Wednesday night, as the Las Vegas 51s downed Reno, 12-4, at Aces Ballpark.
Las Vegas struck first with a two-run home run off the bat of Danny Perales in the second inning, and the lead would stand up. The Aces scored their first run in the sixth on a Josh Bell RBI double and pushed across three more in the seventh, but Reno never would dig all the way out of the early hole.
Aces starter Joe Martinez (0-2) took the loss in his first start since being optioned back to Reno by the Diamondbacks. Martinez allowed three runs—two earned—on four hits over 5.0 innings of work. Three Aces relievers combined to allow nine runs—eight earned—over the game's final four frames.
Las Vegas starter Jesse Chavez (4-1) picked-up the victory, scattering a run on three hits over 5.1 innings of work. Chad Beck recorded the final four outs to convert the save, his second of the season. At the dish for the Aces, Bell stretched his hitting streak to nine-straight games with a sixth-inning single. Eaton scored a run and registered an outfield assist, while Konrad Schmidt singled and doubled for Reno's lone two-hit effort of the evening.
The series continues on Thursday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Charles Brewer (1-1, 5.73 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while Las Vegas' starter is yet to be announced. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT, and the day will be highlighted by another Coors Light Thirsty Thursday™
