Pack Takes Game Two From Bulldogs 7-4

The University of Nevada (18-16, 3-2 WAC) baseball team defeated Louisiana Tech (17-18, 1-4 WAC) in game two of a Western Athletic Conference  series 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park.  The Wolf Pack won Friday 3-2 and is now 18-16 overall and 3-2 in WAC play.  The Bulldogs dropped to 17-18 and 1-4 in conference action.

 LA Tech led 3-0 going to the bottom of the fourth inning but Nevada scored the next five runs to move in front 5-3.  Catcher Carlos Escobar's double scored two runs in the fourth to close the gap to a single run.  First baseman Kewby Meyer's two-RBI double in the fifth inning put the Pack in front 5-3.

 The Bulldogs scored a single run in the sixth but Nevada scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make the final score 7-4.  

 Freshman Tyler Wells (3-3) earned the victory allowing four runs, three earned pitching a career-high 6.2 innings to even his record at 3-3.  Matt Gardner (8) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his eighth save of the season.  The eight saves are  tied with Scott Albin (1999) for the fourth best season in school history.

 Phil Maton (5-4) was tagged with the loss giving up five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.

 Sophomore Tommy Niebergall (3-for-5,R,2RBI)  had three hits for the Pack which were all doubles and he drove home two.  Niebergall had two doubles on Friday giving him five in the first two games of the series.  Escobar (3-for-4,3RBI) also had three hits and drove in three for the Pack.

 LA Tech shortstop Ryan Gebhart (2-for-5) led the Bulldogs with two hits.  Third baseman Beau Bayless (1-for-4,R,3RBI) tied for game-high honors with three RBI.  Bayless' hit was a two-run homer in the fourth inning.

 The final game of the series is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Tom Jamison (4-1) is slated to get the start for the Pack while LA Tech has yet to name their starter.
