Nevada Opens WAC Play With 10-5 Victory At N.M.S.U.

LAS CRUCES, N.M.  –  The University of Nevada (16-12, 1-0 WAC) baseball team opened Western Athletic Conference play with a 10-5 victory at Presley Askew Field over New Mexico State (23-9, 0-1 WAC) on Thursday night.  With the victory the Wolf Pack improved to 16-12 on the season while the Aggies had their 14-game win streak snapped and stand at 23-9.

Trailing 2-1 heading to the top of the third inning the Pack scored three times and never trailed again on the way to the victory.  Catcher Carlos Escobar's double scored two of the runs and the Pack never trailed the rest of the way.  NMSU closed within a run at 4-3 but Nevada scored  in each of the last four innings to hold off the Aggies.

Right hander Bradey Shipley (5-2) won his fifth game of the season allowing three runs, two earned in six innings on the mound.  Ryan Beck (3-2) suffered the loss giving up six runs, five earned in his six innings of work.

Brooks Klein (2-for-3,R,RBI), Kewby Meyer (2-for-4,R,2RBI), Ryan Teel (2-for-4,R,RBI) and Garrett Yrigoyen (2-for-4,2R,) and Escobar (2-for-3,3RBI) each had two hits for the Pack as they totaled 13 in the game.  Escobar drove in a game-high three.  Jamison Rowe and Tommy Niebergall  each hit solo homer runs.  It was the first home run for Niebergall playing for the Pack.

Tanner Waite (2-for-3,R) and Kyle Phillips (2-for-4,RBI) had two hits each for the Aggies.  Designated hitter Cody Edwards hit a solo home run to give NMSU a 2-1 lead after two innings.
